The Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street exhibition, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, sponsored by WV Humanities Council, will be open at Moorefield High School, September 1 -30. In addition, related projects, exhibitions, and events developed by community groups will explore the theme of change in their rural county:

8/30 – 9/30 – Open to the Public Sat & Sun 12:00noon-4:00 +2 – 3 Weeknights (times TBD) (Open for Hardy County students & other schools during school hours) Extended hours during Heritage Weekend
Location: Moorefield High School
Hickory Hill Farm: Crossroads of Change
Reception and displays about the various people, family members and related people, who lived through the centuries of change on the farm, along with banjo history/music, and wine tasting by West Whitehill Winery. Banjo presentation and demonstration by Ben Townsend at 12:00noon. Saturday, September 25, 11:00am – 1:00pm. Exhibition will also be available for viewing on Sunday, September 26, 10:00am to 4:00pm
Hardy County Historical Society Museum: History of the Agricultural Economy of Hardy County
The exhibits, “Cattle Was King” and “Poultry Continued the Agricultural Economy,” will be open every Saturday in September from 10:00 am – 3:00 pm and every Thursday from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm (other days to be announced).
Eastern WV Community & Technical College and Hardy County Planning Office: Visualization of Land Use Through Mapping
Copies of hand drawn maps from 1822 to contemporary GIS mapping. September 1 to September 30, Monday through Thursday 8:00am – 7:00pm and Fridays, 8:00am – 4:00pm. Hours on September 25 10am-4pm.
Farms Work Wonders and Wardensville Garden Market: The Land We Occupy
Student-led tours of the historic Frye Farm to discuss agricultural practices from early indigenous peoples through the 20th century then move across the road to see current, certified organic farming practices at the Wardensville Garden Market. Tours scheduled for 11:00am and 1:00pm on September 25 and 26. For additional days/times check their website (https://wardensvillegardenmarket.org/).
Lost River Museum (Lost River Educational Foundation)
Demonstrations will contrast the differences between modern and traditional craft processes. The Museum and the Artists Marketplace will be open Saturdays 11:00-5:00 and Sundays 11:00 – 3:00. Check their website (http://www.lostrivercrafts.com/) for more information.
South Fork General Store. Moorefield Examiner and Hardy County Chamber of Commerce: Where is this?
During the 1990’s the Moorefield Examiner published photographs of sites within a four- county area for their readers to identify. Lisa Keplinger collected these articles and created handmade scrap books. Along with photos from the Examiner’s archives, the scrap books will be displayed in the Chambers window on Main Street throughout September.
Town of Moorefield and Hardy County CVB: Robert Higgins House Museum
The Robert Higgins House has been undergoing restoration for its adaptive reuse as a small museum. Copies of the Master Plan and photographs of the 1990’s demolition of the adjacent structure will be on view. Open September 25, 10am – 4pm.
